Oktoberfest

September 20th, 2010

The congregation at St John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 270 Crichton St, is preparing to celebrate the 115th Anniversary of the church. To mark this occasion we are planning an Oktoberfest Dinner & Dance, in the true German tradition, on Saturday, October 30th beginning at 6pm in the Ebinger Memorial Hall.

Dinner will feature sausages and sauerkraut with apfelstrudel for dessert. A cash bar serving beer, wine and soft drinks will be available.

The Ottawa Rube Band will get everyone on the dance floor, so bring your dancing shoes and help us celebrate! The Band has it's origins in the Baden Rube Band, a volunteer band at the former Canadian Forces Base Baden, Germany. The Baden Rube Band consisted of military and civilian personnel from CFBs Baden and Lahr, their families, teachers and local German personnel. They played traditional oom-pah-pah music all over Germany and also in many other European countries. With the closure of CFB Baden in 1993, the tradition continues with the Ottawa Rube Band. It remains a volunteer band, one of the largest traditional German-style bands in Canada.

Tickets are $30 per person and $10 for children under 12 years. Call 613-749-9680 or 613-749-6953

Author Reading with Music at the Martin-Luther Church

September 8th, 2010

On September 12th, in the series Church and Culture, there will be an author reading at the Martin-Luther Church in commemoration of the 110th birthday of Anna Seghers (1900-1983). Irina Wittmer, an increasingly noted writer from Germany, will read from her recent book Ausflug der toten Bräute: Acht fiktive Begegnungen mit Anna Seghers und dem jüdischen Mainz (2009) (Excursion of the dead brides: Eight fictional encounters with Anna Seghers and Jewish Mainz). The evening will be framed musically by Dina Namer, piano, and Rachel Eugster, soprano.

Born into a Jewish family in the city of Mainz, Anna Seghers was a major writer. Her best known novel, Das siebte Kreuz (The Seventh Cross), served as vehicle for a film with Spencer Tracy, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. It deals with the attempted flight of seven prisoners from a Nazi concentration camp.

Date and Time: September 12th, 7:30 PM
Place: Martin Luther Church, 499 Preston St
(corner Carling and Preston)
